A glacier lily (Erythronium grandiflorum). Glacier lilies flower within days of snowmelt and are an important nectar resource for newly arrived migratory broad-tailed hummingbirds (Selasphorus platycercus). Scientists are finding that the lilies are flowering earlier as the climate warms, with a record-early flowering in 2012.
Flowering now begins before the hummingbirds arrive.Image credit: David W. Inouye, Department of Biology, University of Maryland
