This photo, taken in Palmyra Atoll in July 2016, shows a researcher deploying a series of sensors that make up the "Benthic Ecosystem Acidification Measurement System,” or BEAMS. These are used to assess how different types of benthic communities affect the chemistry of the surrounding seawater.
The research goal is to determine the potential buffering capacity of different communities to ocean acidification.
