This is the disease-causing fungus Candida albicans. Research in the lab of Gerald R. Fink of the Whitehead Institute uncovered the genetic wiring diagram underlying the infectiousness of C. albicans, a fungus that causes thrush in babies, vaginal infections in women, and life-threatening infections in chemotherapy and AIDS patients.
