Sun on the Mall

Full Text:

This is an image of the sun, taken through one of the solar telescopes at the Astronomy Festival on the National Mall. The annual star-gazing event, Astronomy Festival on the National Mall, started early, with visitors looking at the biggest star of all, the sun. The National Science Foundation had both solar and radio telescopes on hand for visitors prior to the sun setting, and with the help of a cellphone adapter, they could take pictures like this one.

The free event is held by the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, to generate awareness and enthusiasm for astronomy and astrophysics. This year, which included a night of perfect weather , approximately 10,000 people got information from several federal agencies and glimpses of several night sky objects, thanks to amateur astronomers who also had telescopes on hand. Special thanks to Donald Lubowich at Hofstra University, who has organized this event for the seventh year in a row.
