In the foreground is the old Petrel whaling ship, located at the abandoned Grytviken whaling station, South Georgia. The US Antarctic Program research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer is seen in the distance. The ship Nathaniel B. Palmer is a first-rate platform for global change studies, including biological, oceanographic, geological and geophysical components.
